Темное неравномерно окрашенное ядро, граница которого обычно не совпадает с годичными слоями, отделенное от заболони темной (реже светлой) каймой и не отличающееся по твердости от окружающей древесины.
Примечания
1. Имеет темно-бурую или красно-бурую окраску, иногда с лиловым, фиолетовым или темно-зеленым оттенком.
2. По форме на поперечном сечении ствола может быть округлым, звездчатым или лопастным, иногда бывает эксцентричным; на продольных разрезах имеет вид широкой полосы одного или нескольких из указанных цветов.
3. Наблюдается у древесных пород с нерегулярным ядрообразованием (например, береза, бук, клен).
